Client: BART, Oakland

BART received a grant to develop an illustrative guide that helps people learn to use its transportation system. The black and white guide with minimal text would help visual learners, individuals with low vision or cognitive impairments, and readers with limited English skils. The illustrations would focus on specific tasks and equipment critical to riding BART correctly, such as purchasing and using a ticket, and finding the correct platform. Presentation of the submittal was restricted to black ink only, 8.5 x 11.

I worked with an illustrator, Lamnho Giang, to develop characters, icons, and sample layout. Our focus was to design an easy-to-use, visually inviting guide that would appeal to a wide range of demographics. From our field research emerged four character studies and icons that would help riders easily identify tasks. Shading and textured backgrounds were added to create depth and establish heirarchy of information. Bold san serif fonts were selected to provide a higher degree of readability.
